Jerusalem poorest of Israel’s large cities

The average income per capita is NIS 6,583, 21% less than the average in Tel Aviv.

On the 39th Jerusalem Day, marking the reunification of the city in the 1967 Six-Day War, Jerusalem is ranked last among Israel’s four largest cities in terms of average income per capita NIS 6,583; 5.6% below the national average, and 21% less than the average in Tel Aviv.

Rishon LeZion has an average income per capita of NIS 7,424, and Haifa has NIS 6,732.

The main reasons for the low average income per capita in the capital is the large number of wage-earners in the city, amounting to half of its workforce, and because a fifth of the city’s families have no breadwinner. It turns out that Jerusalemites do not care to work: work-hours per week are the lowest in the country at 38.5 hours, compared with the national average of 40.6 hours.

Women in Jerusalem are also oppressed. The average income of a female Jerusalemite is NIS 5,560, 15.5% below the municipal average income, and 25% less than the average man’s income of NIS 7,414.

The average income of a male Jerusalemite is 12.4% below the national average male income, and 28.4% less than the average man’s income in Tel Aviv of NIS 10,355. The average male income in Haifa is NIS 8,114 and in Rishon LeZion it is NIS 9,242.
